Steven Samols - Global Visions: Austrian Émigrés and Photojournalism, 1905-1965

Steven Samols received a 2019 BIAAS grant to further his dissertation research into transatlantic flows of visual communication between Austria and the United States in the twentieth century.

Steven’s dissertation, titled “Global Visions: Austrian Émigrés and Photojournalism, 1905-1965,” looks at the impact of Austrian, emigrant photographers who shaped global photojournalistic institutions in the postwar era. His work emphasizes both the Jewish and gendered character of photography as well as a specifically Austrian orientation toward a universal, visual form of communication.

Steven received his bachelor’s degree in history from New York University and his master’s degree in political theory from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Steven is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the history department at the University of Southern California.
