Our Mission

The Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies (BIAAS) was established in 2008 to promote an understanding of the historic relationship between the United States and Austria, including the lands of the former Habsburg Empire.

BIAAS accomplishes its mission through four main activities:

Awarding grants and fellowships in the fields of history, politics, economics, law, cultural studies, and public history

Organizing events such as lectures and conferences

Publishing the Journal of Austrian-American History with Penn State University Press

Engaging with a broader public audience through digital programming, including blog posts, podcasts and videos as well as through social media

The Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies has supported over 200 grantees and fellows in the areas of cultural studies, economics, history, law, politics, and public history.
