Monika Platzer - Cold War and Architecture: The Competing Forces that Reshaped Austria after 1945

In contrast to Berlin, Vienna is not perceived as the site of a politicized architectural debate during the Cold War.

Yet in Austria’s capital, each of the four occupying forces used architecture as a propaganda platform for cultural, ideological, economical, and technological transfers. This publication constitutes the first attempt to situate Vienna’s post-war architecture in the context of the Cold War and shows that the occupation laid the foundations for its repositioning after 1945.

Monika Platzer is Head of Special Collections and Curator at the Architekturzentrum Wien.
