Rutgers University, German Department

BIAAS funded a grant of $25,000 to Rutgers University for a series of seminars and conferences relating to the historic relationship between Austria and the United States to be held during the spring and fall semesters of 2009 and the spring semester of 2010. In the spring of 2009, there were three lectures on Austrian literature and a graduate conference on ethnic minorities of the Habsburg Empire. Fall 2009 focused on the work of Sigmund Freud with three lectures and a graduate seminar class. In the spring of 2010, Rutgers held two different lectures on film with discussions led by Roy Grundmann of Boston University and Alexander Horwath of the Filmmuseum Vienna. This grant also led creation of a Botstiber lecture series at Rutgers which would receive an additional grant in 2012 which funded the series through 2014.


Rutgers University is the state university of New Jersey. The university’s Department of Germanic, Russian, and East European Languages and Literatures was responsible for the organization of the seminars and lectures.
