João Fábio Bertonha

João Fabio Bertonha received a BIAAS grant to research Emperor Maximilian of Mexico and his dream of building a Euro-American Empire during the 1860s.Bertonha will conduct archival research in Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Vienna, Washington, and at the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota. His research explores Maximilian’s political diplomacy during the Civil War, and his attempts to keep good relationships with both the United States and the Confederate States of America, so that his Empire could expand southwards into Central America.


João Fabio Bertonha received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Campinas. He has taught at the State University of Maringa in Brazil and served as a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilian Universität in Munich.
