Britta McEwen

BIAAS granted $6,000 to Britta McEwen to perform a cultural study on the status of illegitimate children in Vienna from the 18th century to the 20th century. The research project involved archival research at the University of Vienna Life History for information on individual illegitimate children and the National Library for data on the legal structures of unmarried mothers and their children. Furthermore, McEwen also conducted interviews with the Caritas Socialis, a religious order that cares for unmarried pregnant women. The project resulted in research for McEwen’s monograph which is yet to be completed.

Britta McEwen received her Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles and has been a professor at Creighton University
