Barbara Louis Reiterer

Barbara Louis was awarded a fellowship of $23,555 to support her dissertation research on Austrian women social scientists who came to the United States in the 1930s and 1940s to escape persecution and found careers in social work. The fellowship involved travel to Center for Jewish History in New York City and the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to complete research for Louis’ dissertation. Furthermore, Louis was able to write four chapters of her dissertation during the fellowship as well as give a number of presentations and teach a class at the University of Linz during the fall semester 2013 on her research topic. The fellowship allowed for the completion in April of 2015 of her dissertation entitled A Second Chance in Exile? German-Speaking Women Refugees in American Social Work After 1933 and the publication of an article for the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2014.


Barbara Louis received her Ph.D. in History of Science at the University of Minnesota in 2015 and has worked as a researcher and data analyst for the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Vienna.
