Regina Range

Regina Range received a 2018 BIAAS grant for her project, “From Vienna to Hollywood: Uncovering the Forgotten Lives and Careers of Three Female Austrian-Jewish Exile Scriptwriters.”This research project, carried out a various Los Angeles film archives, explores the Hollywood screenwriting impact of three almost-forgotten female Austrian-Jewish exiles: Gina Kaus, Vicki Baum, and Salka Viertel. It highlights that these former novelists and playwrights displayed the versatility and courage to master the medium of cinema to express their ongoing concerns with inequality, as well as their efforts to provide venues for antifascist activism.


Regina Range is an Assistant Professor and Language Program Director of German at the University of Alabama. Dr. Range earned degrees in teaching German and English from the Technische Universität Dortmund, Germany in 2006, and both an M.A. in American Studies (2008) and a Ph.D. in German (2012) from the University of Iowa.
