Matti Bunzl - Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Modernist Residences in California

BIAAS awarded a grant to Matti Bunzl to fund the production of the English publication “Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Modernist Residences in California” (working title) by Andreas Nierhaus (text) and David Schreyer (photography).

The project offers a fresh view of lesser-known residences of Californian modernism, details the influence of two Austrian-American architects, Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler, and raises critical questions regarding the commercial iconization of their buildings. The topic will reach international and local audiences through an exhibition and an international conference in Vienna in 2020.

Matti Bunzl received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. He has served as a professor at the University of Illinois and is the director of the Wien Museum. The Wien Museum is Vienna’s municipal museum, covering topics from history of the city to art, fashion and modern culture. Andreas Nierhaus is curator of architecture at the Wien Museum, and David Schreyer, is an architecture photographer based in Austria.
