Joshua Parker

BIAAS granted Joshua Parker $5,800 in order to collect and translate short poetry by Austrian refugees writing in and around New York City during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The poems contextualize past and present responses to issues of asylum, reflect on the state of being stateless, and draw parallels between the United States and Austria. The project will produce a 120-page volume of translated poems side by side with their German originals, including brief biographies and an introduction.

Joshua Parker earned a Ph.D. at the University of Paris and has served as an assistant Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Salzburg.
