Alys George

BIAAS issued a grant of $8,983 to Alys George in order to fund a research project on the modernist literary magazine The Dial and its role in connecting different movements in Austria and the United States. The scope of the project involved research trips to Harvard, Yale, and Cambridge as well as the New York Public Library and the German Literature Archive and Frankfurter Goethe-Haus in Germany. The project was completed after a year extension in 2013 with the publication of “Hugo von Hofmannsthal und The Dial. Briefe 1922-1929” in Hofmannsthal Jahrbuch zur europäischen Moderne, an annotated edition of previously unpublished correspondence, along with entries in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism and an article entitled “Editing Interwar Europe” published in Austrian Studies 23. In addition to the published writings, George also presented her findings at three conferences in 2013 and 2014.

Alys George studied at Stanford University where she received her Ph.D. in German Studies in 2009. She has been an assistant professor at New York University and has published a number of articles and translations.
