Alison Orton

BIAAS issued a grant to Alison Orton for $13,475 in order to study beer in terms of its effects on ethnic and national self-definitions both in the Habsburg Empire and the United States. The grant covered transportation and lodging in Austria and the Czech Republic for eleven months, conducting research in the cities of Vienna, Brno, and Pilsen. The project resulted research for much of Orton’s dissertation as well as numerous presentations in both Austria and the United States.


Alison Orton is a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has served as a teaching assistant at the university.
