University of Vienna, July 2-4, 2024

The Great War and the breakup of the Habsburg monarchy left its successor states with the challenge of state building under difficult conditions. Following the end of the Second World War, Austria again became a focus of international reconstruction efforts.

Co-organized by the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies, the Department of History, and Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna. “American Agents in Austria – After 1918, After 1945” is a two-day conference bringing together scholars from North America and Europe to discuss the strategies of Austria and the successor states to develop their state capacities and to provide basic public goods with the support of American experts on different levels of administration.
