The Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies is proud to present the 2025 Annual Lecture on Austrian-American Affairs, delivered by acclaimed Austrian journalist Hannelore Veit. Titled “Fake News – Hard Facts – True Lies? How News Media Influence Public Opinion in Austria and the United States,” this year’s lecture explores the complex and increasingly urgent relationship between journalism and democracy in the 21st century.
With decades of experience reporting from both Austria and the United States, Hannelore Veit offers a unique perspective on how media landscapes shape—and are shaped by—public perception, political culture, and global narratives.
From 1993 to 2012, Ms. Veit anchored Austria’s most-watched news program, Zeit im Bild, helping define a generation’s relationship with national news. From 2013 to 2020, she served as the Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief for Austrian Public Broadcasting (ORF), covering U.S. politics from within the American capital during a period of heightened political polarization and increasing public distrust in traditional media. Ms. Veit holds degrees from both the University of Vienna and Notre Dame University, and today continues her work as a journalist, author, and media consultant.
