THE ETHNOGRAPHIC GAZE OF EMIL HABDANK DUNIKOWSKI (1855-1924): TRACING CULTURAL TRANSFERS AND IDENTITY-FORMATION PROCESSES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES AND AUSTRIAN GALICIA. Emil Habdank Dunikowski (1855–1924), a Galician geologist and traveller, traversed the American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific during his four scientific journeys (in 1891, 1892, 1893 and 1906). By investigating previously unexplored archival sources and Dunikowski’s published works, the project will examine processes of shaping the popular ethnographic imagery of Indigenous peoples and natural environments of America to the Polish public within the Habsburg Empire and the United States. The project will contribute to a better understanding of transatlantic cultural transfers and some of the preconceptions, perceptions and stereotypes on the non-European otherness which, although formed at the turn of the nineteenth century, still have some influence on Central-European societies.
