The TransAtlantic Journeyman” looks back at the people, places, and ideas that shaped Siegfried Beer’s remarkable life and career. From a small town in Lower Austria to classrooms and lecture halls across the United States, Dr. Siegfried Beer’s life has been shaped by the enduring connection between Austria and America. Born in Scheibbs in 1948, Beer graduated summa cum laude from the Akademisches Gymnasium Graz before studying history and English at the University of Vienna. In 1968, he crossed the Atlantic as a Fulbright scholar at Wesleyan University in Connecticut . This is a journey that would help define a lifetime of academic exchange and his future life path. Over the decades, Beer became one of Austria’s leading scholars of international politics, intelligence history, propaganda, and security studies. He taught and researched at the University of Graz, held guest professorships at the University of Minnesota, Harvard University, and Columbia University, founded the Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies, and later served as Director of the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies. But this is more than an academic biography.
This is the story of a boy from Scheibbs who came of age in an independent, postwar Austria, found opportunity in America, and built a life’s work around the histories that connect the two worlds.
