Samuel Frederick

BIAAS granted Samuel Frederick $3,326 in order to study Hermann Broch’s novel Sleepwalkers and examine its ideas on collecting and preserving and analyze what that reveals about the narrative and deeper philosophical issues. The project would involve a two week research trip to Yale University’s Broch collection in the Beinecke Library in order to examine Broch’s manuscript drafts and notes on his novel. The project will contribute a major chapter in Frederick’s upcoming book A Poetics of Collecting: The Redemption of Things in German Realism and Modernism.

Samuel Frederick received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2008 and has served as an assistant professor of German at the Pennsylvania State University.
